Yamal road signs will consider indigenous people culture

The Union of Reindeer Herders of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area periodically receives appeals from citizens leading a nomadic way of life in the region that there is a need to develop a new road sign.
The present road signs “Cattle drive” and “Wild Animals” warning the drivers about approaching or crossing of domestic reindeer on the road in the areas of road signs do not fully reflect the identification of domestic reindeer.
The Union of Reindeer Herders of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District came up with an initiative to the Legislative Assembly of the region with a request to work out the issue of developing a new road sign with the conventional name: “Domestic Reindeer Crossing”.

Civic activists offered the Yamal parliamentarians to discuss the development of a new road sign with the conventional name “Domestic Reindeer Crossing”. The Committee has already sent requests to the Department of Transport and Road Facilities of the Autonomous Area, and the Road Traffic Safety Department of the Department of Internal Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, as well as municipalities.
This conventional road sign called: “Domestic reindeer crossing” will be relevant for many regions of the country, where domestic reindeer are herded, – stressed Timur Akchurin, Executive Director of the Union of Reindeer Herders of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District.
This is a vivid example of activities to preserve the environment and create favorable conditions for the traditional economic activities of the Ruissian indigenous peoples of the North.
